for Academic Staff Promotions.

First
–
Indicators of promotion:-
a) Teaching and
supervision.
b) Research and
academic publications.
c) Community and
university services.
These indicators
include the following:-
A) Teaching and
supervision:-
The effective
teaching is the most important duties for the academic member.
Effective teaching includes the following factors:-
1- The effective
participation in the process of teaching, teaching load, and
curriculum variety.
2- The comprehensive
knowledge of the academic material.
3- The ability to
express ideas and transfer of knowledge.
4- The ability to
motivate students and to create interest in the learning material.
5- The effective
participation in students' supervision in the courses of their
academic work.
6- Active participation
in administrating examination by writing questions and analyzing
results.
B) Research and
Academic Publishing:-
1- The academic staff
member's work that is published in a refined magazine or journals,
academic books and any other creativity work.
2- The academic staff
member achievement in his academic field.
3- The academic staff
member participation in research projects in the department,
university, or outside.
C) Community and
University service:-
1- The participation of
the academic staff member in administrative work and committee in
his department and the university.
2- The participation of
the academic staff member in community service.
3- The activities and
achievements in the occupation field.
Second
–
university guide for academic degrees:-
1- lecturer- must hold
a master degree.
2- Assistant professor
–
1- the academic staff
member must hold PhD or a higher educational, occupational,
scientific, or technical degree in the field of specialization where
PhD is not given in the condition that the duration of study must be
no less than three years minimum after the first university degree
(bachelor).
2- For promotion to an
associated professor the academic staff member must stay in the rank
of assistant professor for (5) years in a well known university,
during this time he must present (3) distinguished researches, in
(2) of them he is the sole author/writer.
3- Associate
professor:-
1- The academic stuff
member must hold a PhD degree.
2- For promotion to the
rank of professor, the academic staff member must remain in the
associate professor for (5) years in a well- known university,
during this time he must present (4) original researches, in which
(2) of them he is to be the sole author/writer.
4- The professor is to
fulfill the conditions in part (2) and (3) in the university guide
for academic degrees.
Third
-
General
guide-lines for promotion:-
1- To be promoted to
any of the academic ranks the academic staff member needs to be
successful and to improve himself under the indicators of teaching,
supervision, academic research, publication, university and
community service. As for promotion to professor, the academic staff
member needs to prove excellent in the above mentioned domains.
2-for promotion
purposes, works published before obtaining the PhD degree or
derived directly from the dissertations of master and PhD or those
presented in for promotion previously are eliminated and not looked
at the evaluation process.
3- The scientific
publishing must be in academic refereed journals and magazines that
the university approves of.
4- The number of the
specialized people to judge the academic work is to be (10). Three
of them are to be chosen by the promotion committee to evaluate
works presented by the academic staff member. The university is to
have a yearly up-to-date name list of these specialized people for
this purpose.
5-The judges evaluate
the academic work items using a special form for this purpose, his
own evaluation for each research in a range between 1-5 as within
the following criteria:-
1- Weak (1point).
2- Acceptable
(2points).
3- Good (3 points).
4- Very good (4
points).
5- Excellent (5
points).
6- In all cases, the
mean average of points must not be less than three for all judges.
7- In all cases the
evaluation must not be less than good.
8- The academic
promotion decision is to be taken in the light of the achievement
of the academic member as a whole.
9- For promotion
purpose, a refereed book is dealt with as a single research.
Fourth
–
promotion procedures:-
1- The academic
staff member applying for the promotion must make a formal
request to the dean or the head of his department attached with
(6) copies of the C.V and of each of the items from his academic
research work, reports and/or documents of achievement presented
for evaluation.
2- Personnel
Department is to be contacted to confirm actual duration the
academic member spent in the rank, for promotion purposes.
3- The promotion
committee in the university checks documents presented for
promotion in the following order department/faculty/university.
4- The
committee checks wither the whole package of documents presented for
promotion is complete according to the following list:-
a) The original
request for the promotion of the academic staff member.
b) The letter of
fulfillment for the duration period in the rank for the academic
staff member.
c) Six copies of
each item of the academic work.
d) Students'
evaluation for the academic staff member.
e) Any other
documents of achievement under the indicators of promotions.
f) A list of
referees from academic member list specialized in the field
inside and outside the Kingdom of Bahrain.
5) Three referees
specialized are chosen from the list evaluate the academic work: one
from Bahrain University and two from well known Arab universities.
All correspondences are done secretly to insure transparency.
6) Each referee is sent
a copy of the academic work, C.V, evaluation form, and a copy of
promotion regulations.
7) The procedures of
the promotion go according to a specific time table. In case, one of
the referee correspondences takes more than two months the work is
sent to another referee, and the specialized committee is to
consider all evaluations.
8) In case of approval,
the university issues the promotion.
9) In case of refusal,
the academic staff member is informed about the reasons and is given
the right to apply for promotion after one year taking in
consideration notes and comments in the evaluation.
10)
The academic promotion committee is to keep record of the evaluation
forms.
